LETTER FOR THE OPEN SOURCE VERSION OF THIS TEXTBOOK
July 10, 2024
Dear Readers,
The genesis of this textbook stemmed from a deep-seated passion for the subject matter and a recognition of the critical need for a more interactive learning format tailored to graduate students and newcomers in the field of swallowing disorders. As a long-time educator, I observed the significant gap in resources designed specifically for graduate students, combined with the realization of the importance of a presentation modality that would provide insights into the intricacies of swallow physiology. My aim was not merely to impart knowledge, but to cultivate a dynamic learning environment that would encourage critical thinking and practical application.
When I began this project in 2014, the technology for development of an interactive textbook was in its infancy. Despite challenges, I successfully completed the initial edition of this textbook, fulfilling my intended mission. After 3 years, a second edition was developed. However, as I faced the decision of whether to update the textbook again, or discontinue the project, I realized that I lacked the time and resources to undertake the needed revision.
In 2024, the decision was made to relocate this interactive textbook on to an open educational resource site. In doing so, the book had to be reformatted which necessitated the removal of some of the interactive features. Despite these changes, I hope that this adapted version of the original textbook will still provide value as you explore the exciting world of evaluation and management of swallowing disorders across the lifespan.
