Inclusive Syllabi
Overview: Inclusion Statement for Syllabi
Overview: The Importance of Inclusion Statements, Chosen Names, and Inclusive Syllabi
Creating inclusive learning environments begins with intentional choices—starting with how we design our syllabi and acknowledge students’ identities from day one.
Inclusion statements that affirm chosen names and pronouns are a simple yet powerful way to communicate respect for all students, especially those who are transgender, nonbinary, gender expansive, or exploring their identity. Using correct names and pronouns is not just a matter of courtesy—it is an ethical and professional practice that affirms students’ dignity, fosters psychological safety, and supports academic success. Research consistently shows that students who feel seen and respected in their learning environments are more likely to engage fully and thrive.
Inclusive syllabi take this a step further by clearly articulating values of equity, access, and belonging. They set the tone for the classroom as a shared space where diversity is not only welcomed, but actively supported. Inclusive syllabi may include:
-
Affirming language around identity and expression
-
Clear anti-discrimination and accessibility policies
-
Land acknowledgments or community agreements
-
Resources for support, advocacy, and well-being
By integrating these practices into syllabi and classroom norms, instructors signal that identity matters, language matters, and every student has the right to learn in an environment where they are respected and protected.
Inclusion is not extra. It is essential—and it starts with what and how we choose to say it.
